Understanding Binoculars

On a pair of 7x35 binoculars, the first number (7) refers to the power or magnification. A 7-power binocular makes objects appear 7 times closer or 7 times larger. Higher power makes it harder to hold the glasses steady.

The second number (35) refers to the diameter, in millimeters of the objective lens - the one in front that lets light in. Bigger lenses let in more light. A pair of 7x50 binoculars lets in more light than a pair of 7x35 binoculars, so 7x50 is a better night glass. Bigger diameter also means the binoculars are physically bigger and heavier.

Field of view refers to the width of the area that you can see clearly. A wide field of view is good when watching a football game, for example - you're less likely to lose track of the ball! Field of view is often expressed in "feet at 1,000 yards" and that's the number in the following chart:
