DigitalRebel-CL2.gif (56066 bytes)Canon Digital Rebel is first digital SLR under $1,000

Although this is the first interchangeable lens digital SLR to become available for less than $1,000, Canon didn't leave out any important features to make it so affordable.

It uses all the lenses designed to fit the Canon EOS and Rebel line of film cameras, which means your choice is huge! Because the image chip is smaller than 35mm film, all your lenses will magnify the image about 60% more than they will when used with film cameras - a 200mm lens has the field of view of a 320mm lens, for example. A 28mm lens acts more like a 40mm.

To accompany this exciting new camera, Canon has designed an 18-55mm lens that's currently only available with the purchase of the Digital Rebel.

The system uses the same powerful DP-511 battery system used in other Canon digital models, and the charger and battery are included in the kit. I like Canon's choice for memory card: Compact Flash is about the most universal digital film there is. There's a pretty good built-in flash and also a hot shoe so you can use a bigger, more powerful flash.

Outfit complete with 18-55mm zoom lens, DP-511 battery, charger (memory cards not included) $999.99
