Offering a good mix of a Single Lens Reflex camera's advantages, the IS-30DLX packs a lot in a small camera body. 

The permanently-mounted zoom lens  has a wide 28-110mm zoom range. It's much more sensitive to light than any point-and-shoot camera, which means you can use higher shutter speeds (up to 1/2000th) to freeze action. You can also take flash pictures at much greater distances.

The built-in flash sits high to reduce red-eye, and the zoom lens doesn't lose speed as it zooms. That means the flash range is longer.

You can mount creative filters on the round lens barrel. 

Prints the date on pictures (when you want it to do so) and takes panoramic shots at the flip of a switch.

Although the lens is not interchangeable, you can add high-quality auxiliary lenses to increase the zoom range to 210mm for sporting events.
